We at the YA Sisterhood are sorry to have to do this, but we've decided that this will be the last YA Crush Tournament for the foreseeable future.
We know that you all love these tourneys, and so do we. We have made so many friends in the blogging community because of it. We love hearing stories about how someone picked up a book because of one of our Tournaments. It's a fantastic feeling.
But unfortunately, those great things just don't outweigh all the negative things that are happening to us as a result of the tournament.
There was a great deal of drama surrounding The Heroine Tourney involving what constitutes a Heroine. And though we are just a platform for this event, and don't choose the characters who participate nor write the defenses-- we ended up taking the majority of the heat. People attacked us personally. And unfortunately-- a beloved author of ours-- Cassandra Clare got tons of hate mail from fans angry that her characters won. That was the LAST thing we ever wanted to happen. These tournaments were meant to celebrate not degrade. We dealt with that drama and reasoned that the Crush Tourney would be more laid-back.
So despite our reservations, we committed to another YA Crush Tourney because we knew so many people loved the last one.
And sadly-- we're finding ourselves attacked yet again.
Several people were upset that Sebastian was nominated for the tournament. We hadn't even read the latest TMI book yet, so were unaware of the controversy surrounding him. But regardless-- we didn't think it was right to remove a character that nearly a hundred people had voted for because we disagreed with him being on the list. Why let people vote if we are just going to manipulate things so that it turns out the way we want it? That wasn't what we intended this tournament to be.
So, we dealt with the issue the best way we knew how. We posted a disclaimer so people would know that the nominations were 100% based on people's votes and not our own opinions. We reminded people that we were planning on having a Villain's Tourney in the winter (which we will no longer host), so they could save their bad boy votes for that. And we encouraged people to spread the word about other crushes, so that perhaps Sebastian would get pushed farther down the list (which, in fact, worked as he went from 24 to 29th). We turned on comment moderation, because unfortunately we were getting comments attacking us personally. One particular commenter called us sick and said we were supporting rape and rape culture. We deleted that comment, but left all other comments that rationally detailed why Sebastian should not qualify. We're approving all comments that come in as long as they are appropriate and respectful.
We thought we'd handled this as best we possibly could. But apparently that still wasn't enough.
On twitter, a few users continue to tweet that we support rape culture. They also say that we're not allowing any comments talking about the issue (which if you'll only look at the comments from the nominations post, you'll see that's completely false). Then, someone even made a tumblr post, wherein they posted about the issue, along with pictures of our tweets on twitter that were taken completely out of context. They also said we weren't letting them comment about the issue (which again, the only comments we refused to allow were ones that personally and hatefully attacked us).
(Edit: The owner of the tumblr contacted us and was kind and civil, and we've managed to work things out. She is not the one continuing to send us hateful messages. Please-- don't turn around and do to her what was done to us. She's certainly allowed to have her opinion about whether or not Sebastian is in the Tourney. Our only complaint was that we were personally being dragged into it. The last thing we want is for this to continue to be dragged out. We apologize for linking to her post, and hope that all of us-- both sides of the issue, can settle this peacefully).
We understand that this is just a few people, and there are a lot more of you out there being kind and awesome and doing this for fun. And it's for you all that we will continue this tournament this year (though we thought about canceling it altogether). But as much as we enjoy these tournaments, all three of us sisters have felt sick to our stomachs all day long. It just isn't worth the heartache that this has caused. We've come to the conclusion that when an event gets as large and as popular as the Crush Tourney, there will always be a few dissenters. So, we've decided to indefinitely suspend the Tournaments. We're not saying that we won't do small events like the Jennifer L. ArmenTourney from earlier this year. We're also not saying that we won't ever return to doing YA Crush Tourneys. But this whole mess has broken our spirits. These Tournaments take up SO MUCH of our time, that we've neglected our own lives, jobs, and families to run them. And we just can't continue to do that with the way things have been going.
We're sorry that things ended up this way. We hope you'll understand. And we hope you'll make this YA Crush Tourney, the last for the foreseeable future, as amazing and positive as it can possibly be.
We love you guys!
Best,
Brittany, Amy, & Jennifer
YA Sisterhood
You guys... *hugs* I'm so sorry that happened to you. While I am not a fan of Sebastien, that doesn't give me or anyone else the right to blame it on you! WHAT sort of nonsense is that. Oh man, that sucks so badly I can't even figure out what to say to make it at least a little bit better.
ReplyDeleteActually, here: I'm extremely, extremely, EXTREMELY thankful that you guys took the time to do this and commit to it and be amazing about it. Not only have you handled nasty situations and people with grace, but you also did what's right. While it's certainly disheartening and so sad that the tournaments are not continuing, I wish the best for y'all and if that's what it take, that's what I'll take. So, know that no matter how aggravating and obnoxiously rude others get, me and so many others love and support and root for you guys!
Best best best best best,
Juli
Thanks Juli!
DeleteWe feel awful about this, but we just didn't see a way around it. We love events that bring the book and blogging communities together though, so you can bet you'll see more fun stuff from us. We'll just rack our brains ahead of time to make it as drama-deterrant as possible.
:D
This is extremely unfortunate; it's absolutely upsetting that you have to do this because people are rude and inconsiderate.
ReplyDeleteFrom my understanding, the YA Crush Tourney is all about people's crushes; people--not the YA Sisterhood--vote for who they have a crush on. If they like rapists or bad boys--and maybe haven't read some of the books yet--then so be it. Ir's about who THEY have a crush on, NOT who runs this Tourney. It's not called the YA Crush Good Boy Tourney or YA Crush Bad Boy Tourney; it's the YA Crush Tourney, which means anyone and anybody, good or bad, small or big, short or tall, human or immortal--whatever.
I, personally, am disappointed in the people who have caused this, the people who cannot let others revel in their own fun. I apologize on their behalf and sincerely hope that the Tourneys will continue. For the first time I've gotten involved in this, and I'm loving it.
Thank you, YA Sisterhood, for what you have given me so far. And I'm sorry that somebody could be so rude to people that have committed so much time and effort for the entertainment of others.
Sincerely,
Rachel
Thank you for your support, Rachel!
DeleteWe're glad that you'll get to be involved this time. We're sorry to see it end, too. But like we said-- we might come back to it eventually, but for the moment, we need a break.
You'll definitely see more fun stuff from us in the future though, so we hope you'll stick around!
Of course!
DeleteJust remember something: YOU'RE the better person. Don't let somebody's words take you down.
If there's ever anything I can do, please let me know!
I hate that so many people are attacking y'all . This was such a fun event last year and I was really looking forward to it. I'm glad y'all are still doing this one but I hate so much negativity is now surrounding it. Personally, I don't understand why anyone would vote for Sebastian but it's not y'alls fault that other people are voting for him. I completely agree that it's not your place to decide who's vote gets counted.
ReplyDeleteThis makes me extremely sad, but I completely understand. You guys don't deserve being attacked! You guys are so awesome and I love what you guys do! No matter what, I support the decisions you guys make. <33
ReplyDeleteI’m so sorry you have to deal with this. I can’t believe that people would take the tournament so seriously; they are just a little fun for book lovers.
ReplyDeleteYou guys are amazing for everything you do, and thank you for the tournaments, I love voting in them and reading what the advocates write. I’m on your site every day to read the new reviews and posts.
I applaud you for how you’re handling this; I don’t think I would be able to. I’m sad the tournaments will be over but I completely understand why.
Thank you for everything you guys do on this site honestly.
I'm gonna make this short and sweet. You sistas have my utmost, full support. Thank you for organizing such fun events. I'm sorry that some disgruntled people ruined what was supposed to be a fun event for all readers. YA Sisterhood is kick-ass! Hang in there girls.
ReplyDeleteYou sistas have my full, utmost support. Thank you for organizing such fun events for us and I'm sorry that rude people show their disgruntled side and ruined the fun for the rest of us. YA Sisterhood is kick-ass. Keep your heads up girls. Hugs.
ReplyDeleteI definitely understand why people would be angry about Sebastian, but attacking the hosts of the tournaments is completely unnecessary and wrong! I'm really sorry you girls had to go through that. After all, it's not like hosting these tourneys is easy. It takes a lot of time and effort, which I completely thank you girls for. Your tourneys are always such fun! I do hope that the YA Crush Tourneys will start again soon, but not if you girls end up being attacked again. I'd like to thank you for your time and effort, girls! I hope this last tourney (for now) is a great one. :) <33
ReplyDelete((Hugs))I'm SO sorry that you have had to deal with crap like this! I've really, really enjoyed the tournaments (it's so fun to read what the advocates write about the candidates!) and I have SO appreciated the effort you all have put into running the tournaments! It's unfortunate that the immaturity of a few has to ruin the whole experience for all (and, especially for you gals, who have put *so* much into running it!) As others have said, you were not the ones picking the crushes or suggesting the crushes, you were only counting votes and trying to make it fair for all! I am very, very sorry that you were personally attacked for this! :( I hope this tourney can continue from here on out without all this negative drama and that we can all enjoy it! <3
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry to hear you're being attacked. These competitions really bring out the worst in people. I'm so sorry you have to be the ones on the receiving end of so much blame.
ReplyDeleteAnyone who knows you all knows how awesome you are! And are here with our love and support!
If you need anything, just ask!
<3 and hugs!
*Hugs* I'm so sorry, ladies. You guys don't deserve this crap.
ReplyDeleteDear Internet Trolls: This is why we can't have nice things. I'm sorry you all have to put up with this stuff. I know what it's like to have nasty people come out of the woodwork and just make that sap all of your will to continue a project. I hope you get back to a place where it's fun again for you.
ReplyDeleteI am really sorry to hear about all of the disrespectful people out there who go to such great lengths to ruin other peoples fun. You have my support, and while I am not happy about the tournaments ending... I also understand and respect your decision!!

Hello! I'm the girl whose tumblr you linked. Hi there.
ReplyDeleteI promise this is a civil response . I'm not a mean person. I don't try to be. I figured I should try to explain before I get flooded with all the hate mail tomorrow.
First off, I'm not sure when this response was posted. I never got it or saw it. O_O If I had I would have responded to it (someone on Tumblr didn't agree with me and I reblogged it as well).
I didn't think those quotes were out of context. But it seemed that way. Looking at it now, I can see how some of those could be taken in a way I did not intend (I was furious) and if you wish I can take that section of my argument down. It came off to me that way and well, I was furious.
I did respond to you on twitter with what I thought was a helpful idea (to let him stay but at least let comments through from dissenters). I do agree the one calling you sick should not be posted as well as any others attacking you personally- that was uncalled for.
I understand voters go for this, but all I wanted was for a disclaimer at the least. When you said the Villians tourney, I took it as brushing our ideas aside. It came off that way.
I do understand why you feel this way, but I wish you wouldn't make me into the bad guy here. I did what I thought was right. I make mistakes. I'm sorry. I would have responded to your post if I saw it and I was out all afternoon with my father. I'm not all knowing.
That's besides the point. I would like the tourneys to go on because I do think they are a fantastic idea (despite this issue) with stuff preventing it from happening again.
My one thing I ask, is that you don't link to my tumblr. Feel free to copy the post or mention it, but don't let people find it. You have a lot of fans and I have little. I'm 17- tumblr has anon where people can send hate mail. I do not want to wake up Monday to find 15+ posts on why I suck/ should go die/ am a wanker.
I'm sorry this happened and I would change things, but I don't change responding. I did what I thought was right.

Hi Alexia--
DeleteThank you for your comment. I have quite happily taken down the link to your tumblr. And I would appreciate it if you would take down the misrepresented pictures of my twitter feed. As that is also my personal feed that I use for my work in the publishing industry, not just blogging.
We understand that things like this can start to spin out of control, which is part of why we posted this to just air everything out because clearly trying to stay out of the drama wasn't working for us.
The Villains tourney tweet was never intended to brush you guys off. It was in the hopes of dissuading people from voting for him, because really-- we didn't want the drama any more than anyone else.
And as for the things you said you wanted-- letting dissenters post comments as well as the disclaimer-- we did both of those things... hours before your post went up. Which is why we made this post because we didn't see anything else we could possibly do.
I have no hard feelings against you. This is a touchy subject, and it obviously must be handled with care. I'll do what I can to dissuade people from taking it out on you. We don't want to turn this into a war (though we are still getting some incredibly nasty remarks from people).
Please-- feel free to email us (yasisterhood@gmail.com) if you want to talk more or if you continue to get negative response. We'll do as much damage control as we can.
We're sorry this happened, too.
Just to say that you guys are awesome, hands down. For being better than the people who seek to bring you down. You've risen above all of this, and that's what makes you wonderful people. It could have been so easy just to be like, "You're flaming us, we won't have the tourney" but instead you are still making things happen, and I applaud you. You guys work so hard to make such a wonderful thing happen, and like you say, you don't get paid to do it. You're on your own time, and there are some people out there who just can't see past that. I love these events - every single time I see them happening, I get the banner out and start waving it and screaming YAY!
ReplyDeleteI'm just sorry you've all had to go through that. It's not nice at all. Free hugs and cupcakes?
P.S. Random, completely unrelated question - can people nominate to 'host' a crush, or will you be choosing bloggers to do it?
Go down a few posts and you'll see the advocate entry form :) Come, join us. We have cookies and books.

Honestly, when I read this, I began to cry. It upsets me how negative and narrow-minded people are becoming. I was really excited for the Villains and Heroines tournaments! But I guess I will think with the glass half-full and say that I am extremely excited for the coming tournament and that I hope the other tournaments will someday come back. I hope the VA Sisterhood and Cassie Clare will get apology letters to show people still have some decency though I doubt it.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that this had to stop. it seems like a cool idea. and I'm sorry you all got attacked, but linking someone's personal tumblr to a public blog is pretty wrong... no matter what they said. You basically just opened the door for that person to get hateful messages on their personal tumblr account.
ReplyDeleteWhile I am extremely disappointed this will be the last tourney, I completely understand your decision. I am so sorry you had to deal with stuff like this. Blogging is supposed to be fun and a great place for us to gush about our favorite characters. While I understand people being upset with Sebastian being a "crush", you guys are not the ones who put them there. It is sad that people get this out of hand over things that really have no bearing on anything but are simply just supposed to be fun. I sincerely hope all of this hate dies down and blogging can be fun for you guys once again!
ReplyDeleteOh my god!!! Why are people so mean and hateful. I just wanna give you guys a massive massive hug.
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad that it ended this way - I'm really cross at you haters! I mean I don't like Sebastian but I NEVER give anyone grief for it.
I hope you lovely ladies get a lot of positive that you deserve and I hope this tourament will be the best ever!!!
I@M here ever you ever need me!!
I'm shocked (maybe naively) but I can't believe that people would act like this about something that's just for fun. I completely understand why you are pulling the plug but its sad to see it go.
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear about this-- while you ladies knew that I definitely didn't agree with Sebastian being nominated by fans for the tourney (esp from an advocate's viewpoint... I couldn't imagine having to defend him O_O ...and worse in a pitch-hit situation), I can't believe that this became personal. *GIANT HUGS*
ReplyDeleteI fell in love with so many books because of the sisterhood tourneys and the best feeling as an advocate was seeing a comment to the advocacy post about how someone was going to pick up one of my favorite books because of my advocacy (even when my hero or heroine was being crushed by another fandom.) I hope this tourney does this a million times over for all of the crushes who do make it in.
My votes are still saved and I'll bump some boys up if they need it!
*hugs*
(Emberchyld)
I am both sad and shocked that a fun tourney can turn around and become toxic just because people don't agree with the nominations.
ReplyDeleteI love the YA crush tourneys and the other tournaments you have hosted as well, it is a fun way to chat about books, and both you and the people who write about the various characters to get us all to vote for them put in so much work to make it happen.
I hope things will ease down, and that the tourney will be only fun and beautiful!
*cyberhugs*
This makes me upset because the tournaments were so fun:( Thanks for still hosting the tournament this year and sorry about all the people who are ruining it. I personally don't understand how someone could crush on a guy like that, but that's up to the individual, I guess, and you have done a fantastic job handling the situation. No one has any right to attack you personally, and it's too bad that the few that think they do are ruining things for the rest of us. I hope for the tournaments to come back, but after all of this drama I understand if they don't.
ReplyDeleteSO sorry this happened!! Even if I am upset about not having anymore Tourney's possibly, I completely understand.
ReplyDeleteI just wish some people would not be so...mean. They just ruin people's fun. :/
-Maddi
This sucks. It's supposed to be a game. It's supposed to be fun, but theyre taking it all seriousy. Sorry this happened to you. Some people just dont know how to have a good time and value all types of opinions.
ReplyDeleteGah! I'm so sad for you Ladies! It's disappointing that something so fun can be weighed down with so much negative. Love it or hate it those characters were nominated for a reason, it doesn't mean any of us are advocating Rape, rather that one author did her job and made us feel something with her writing. Did I love cols? No, I didn't. But I adored the fact that Cassandra was Brave and took a chance with Sebastian's character. Sad that such an iconic event must be ruined because a few people can't see the bigger picture! Good Luck Girls!!!
ReplyDeleteIt makes me sad that this has happened to a fun ya-literature blog. I found your blog last year because of the YA Crush Tourney and have been a faithful follower. I didn't get to vote for all the picks last year because I didn't stumble on the blog until towards the end of the tourney. I've looked forward to this second one so that I could really get my vote in. I'm disheartened that people would be so rude to you, our authors, and others' opinions.
ReplyDeleteOMG! That's horrible..not a huge fan of Sebastian but PEOPLE nominated him...YOU have nothing to do with it..This is so sad..I always look forward to your tournaments :(
ReplyDeleteI cannot believe people send HATE mail over this...
Oh my gosh, I am so sorry people have been so hateful to you guys!! I just don't understand why some people can't see that you are not the ones who pick the characters for your tournaments, nor who wins them. I have loved your tourneys since I first found out about them, and it is such a shame that you have to suspend them. I do totally understand why you have to do that, though!! I would totally do the same thing.
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to let y'all know you definitely have my full support and understanding. Thank you so much for letting everyone know what was happening and how you are dealing with it!!
Best wishes,
Megan @ Bookworm in Love
Sorry this has happened. Last summer I found so many good books because of this tournament. I can't wait to see all the matches & thanks for all you do!
ReplyDeleteoh, this is just horrible! i love your tournaments, how it brings authors and members of their fandom's together. I feel so sorry for you that you had to go through this.
ReplyDeleteWow people can be so rude and ridiculous. These tournaments are for fun and entertainment and now we won't have them. Sometimes I wonder what is wrong with people. I am sorry for you being attacked but thank you for being such kind hosts. This just blows me away and I definitely understand your need to end these tournaments. I will be sorry to see these go but thank you for taking the time to explain.
ReplyDeleteI love y'all. You rock. Other people suck. ;) Wine by the pool ASAP!
ReplyDeleteSome people are just so ignorant, mean and unreasonable. I am really sorry that people are attacking you guys. Cassie talked about this when Clary won the last Tournament - I was already quite upset back then, but now I am even more annoyed.. you create this amazing tournament and then some people who can't deal with their favourite not winning have to go and ruin it for everyone.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't vote for Sebastian as a hero either but everyone has a right to have an opinion on him (and lets face it, there are many people who think he's hot and amazing even though he did some really terrible things in CoLS) - we may not understand that PoV but that doesn't give us the right to be hateful towards them. And it sucks that this happened to you, especially considering that you had no hand in putting him on that list in the first place (because if you start pre-selecting the nominations it gets diffucult to draw the line on right/wrong and then this whole tournament would be for nothing). Those people really need to grow up..
So what I really wanted to say is that I am sorry you had/have to go through this and, also I am sad that you won't host anymore tournaments, I completly understand where you're coming from!
Sadly, this is just one more reason that makes me want to quit blogging altogether. Everyday something negative happens, whether it be upset authors over negative reviews, upset bloggers trashing other bloggers who win a contest, or a multitude of other things. And to tell you the truth...this incident with the tournaments saddens me the most. The tournaments are supposed to be fun and bring the book community together as a whole.
ReplyDeleteThe tournaments are a great way to promote books and authors and for readers to get to know the characters a little better. I hate to see them go away, but I would do the same thing if I were in your shoes. I'm severely allergic to drama (LOL).
You ladies at the YA Sisterhood have been so gracious and kind by holding these tournaments which I imagine take a great deal of time and hard work. I'm not sure why anyone would vote for Sebastian but everyone has their own opinions but you should not be held responsible for them. I thought the Villain Tournament was a great way to deal with the problem at hand.
I'm sending you a great big hug and hoping, that when the dust settles, maybe more tournaments can be held. I am truly sorry people are taking away something so great and wonderful! Thank you for all you do in the blogging world! You are all phenomenal people!
It takes just a few to ruin the fun for all, huh? I'm sorry you gals were attacked personally over this. That should not have happened. I think you all are amazing for organizing this event. I for one enjoyed it last year & am super psyched for this year. It will definitely be missed in years to come, but I understand your decision for now.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry this has happened to you guys. Love the tourney's but can completely understand why you would not want to go through that kind of ugliness.
ReplyDeleteJust want to say that you guys have done an amazing job with them despite the ugliness. I'm glad I've been able to be part of them.

ReplyDeleteAhh - I am not sure my other comment with through - so if this is a repeat post. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteI am really saddened to hear that people have taken it to that extreme. What part of "this is based on peoples votes" do they not understand? I get where they are coming from - I too am disappointed by some of the boys that have made the list as well as the last two winners (even though I love Cassie's books) but that has nothing to do with y'all or Cassandra. The tournaments are fun and so I vote and root for my favorite in hopes that someone will pick up their book and see what I love about that character and vise verse.
During the last crush tournament a friend and I were against each other-she was Team Kilt - I was Team Tod. Afterward we read the other book and she messaged me saying she get's it now... and I think Zach is a great guy (worthy of all the support) but, Logan is more my style.
I am so disappointed that it came to closing the tournaments. I was really looking forward to the villain tournament in the fall.
What a shame. :( This will be a loss for everyone. So sorry you're going through this. I don't think people realize the power their words have, even on the internet. Accusations should not be thrown around carelessly.
ReplyDeleteBest of luck, girls! And thanks for all you do!
Hello!
ReplyDeleteI’m terribly sorry for you guys! To get such a hateful response to something you do out of absolute love and passion… it simply isn’t right. I’ve always loved your tournaments. Being a Cassandra Clare-fan myself, I actually discovered your blog last year when you hosted the first tourney. To see what haters have done to it breaks my heart.
As mentioned, I’m a Cassandra Clare-fan. Do I support Sebastian’s nomination? Not really, but I get why some would. Look aside from all the bad qualities; he’s a hunk, which is the meaning of this tourney after all. As Rachel already mentioned in her comment: “It's not called the YA Crush Good Boy Tourney or YA Crush Bad Boy Tourney; it's the YA Crush Tourney, which means anyone and anybody, good or bad, small or big, short or tall, human or immortal—whatever.” I know these two border between good and evil, but what about Cam (Fallen) and Damon (Vampire Diaries)? They’re not perceived as very nice characters either. Yes, they are sweeter than and not as murderous as Sebastian probably is, but all you need is to look behind the motives. I’m not defending Sebastian’s actions or calling them okay – but really, when it all comes down to it; we’re talking about characters from books. This tourney is for FUN.
About the hateful mail calling you sick and supportive of rape – Cassandra already wrote her own reply to rape being part of CoLS in this post: http://cassandraclare.tumblr.com/post/23500077162/rape-myths-rape-culture-and-the-damage-done
To attack you nevertheless is simply mean and unfair. It’s not your choice whether he’s on the list or not – it’s up to us, since we are the once to call the shots. I am astounded and deeply disappointed to read about all of this. They always say “haters gonna hate” but you’d think they’d have at least a little bit of decency.
I wish I could give you all hugs and cookies, because you’ve handled this amazing! I don’t know if I would’ve been able to do it as great, since my temper has a habit of running off with me.
Love to all of you adorable sisters, who do this for free (It’s great to know I’m not the only one who’s head over heels in a ton of YA-hotties!). You have my support – even if this should be the last tourney; I’ve come to love you guys over the past year and… well, I’m not going anywhere!
Happy tourney!
-- Marie
Sorry about this all. I was so excited to actually have characters who might be eligible, and then this happens! I wish the best for you. :)
ReplyDeleteGirls, you put so much time and effort into this just to bring some fun to blogging community and to promote books. The fact that you all have been attacked literally brought tears to my eyes while reading this post.
ReplyDeleteI am heartsick to think that anything negative has come of such a positive thing, either to any of you, or to any of the authors.
Please know that I am sorry that this has happened and while I'll miss the fun times that this brings and the fact that it brings books to so many peoples attentions, I completely support your decision. I wish it weren't necessary.
That's awful people can really suck. I can see why people would be upset if the same author's characters keep winning, my friend I and I were talking about it the other day in fact. It's too bad it can't be one character per author so more books and character's get exposed instead of multiple slots being filled up with the same book/author.
ReplyDeleteBut I get why it's not like that, you guys don't want to manipulate it and put restrictions which is cool. I know there was a lot of complaint from people doing giveaways in exchange for votes last time too.
I'm sad to see the tourneys ending but now I want this one to be even better! Sorry you ladies are having a hard time and sorry to Cassie for getting hate mail because she wrote characters that people love.
I am terribly sorry that you have been put under so much unnecessary stress due to something you put so much effort in! People should be grateful you take time out of your day for your followers, not send hate mail. And I'm horrified people would go so far as to send hate mail to authors. I understand why people might be upset about Sebastian, but honestly, he is a fictional character. As immoral as his actions in the book might have been, if people still vote for him, they should recognize that he isn't real, the events in the book aren't real, and they should leave an author who brings public attention to such a horrific issue at peace.
ReplyDeleteI'm so disappointed that people could not act in a respectably. This was only for fun. I just wanted to let you guys know that everyone appreciated the time you put into this, and for creating such a thing at all. I really enjoyed it. I hope you bring it back in the future!
ReplyDeleteI'm so disappointed that people could not act more respectably. This was only for fun, no need to get all worked up about it. I just wanted to let you guys know that I really enjoyed your Tournaments, and I hope you bring them back in the future!
ReplyDeleteThis makes me sad. You ladies put SO much work and heart into these tournaments. I'm sorry another incident has come up to sully it. Last year's Crush Tourney was pure fun and one of the best experiences I've had as an author. I made dozens of new friends, learned about fabulous books, and stayed up late playing games and sharing laughs with people around the world.
ReplyDeleteI can see how a rape victim/survivor might find the very presence of a rapist on a crush list disturbing. It's hard to understand unless you or someone close to you has been through it. It's more than a matter of opinion--rape is evil and someone who does it shouldn't be held up as crush-worthy, no matter how hot they are. I think Cassie would agree, based on her post on rape culture.
So I can understand the reaction. But there is NO EXCUSE for hate mail or the kinds of personal attacks launched against you. I thought you handled a delicate situation with grace and respect. For you to change the rules midway through the game would invalidate the entire tourney.
The fact is, sometimes popular vote produces results we don't like, in real life and on the internet. The only solution is to rally more people on the other side, which is exactly what you were saying yesterday.
Anyway, I've rambled enough. I'm sorry there won't be a villains' tournament--honestly, I was looking forward to a tourney where I could just be a spectator, lol. I think there would be less hostility among competitors when the characters are people we're not supposed to like. But I completely understand and support your decision.
I still think we can make this a fabulous tournament. If one of my boys is lucky enough to make it in, Team Kilt will be here with a truckload of positive energy (and complete goofiness)! *hugs*
I'm so sorry this happened to you ladies. You put so much heart into these tournaments and you should not be attacked in any way. I can't believe some people are taking it so seriously. It's supposed to be fun. It's not called the YA Good Guy Tourney it's the YA Crush Tourney so to each their own. I hope in the future we'll see the return of the YA Tourneys. They're always so much fun.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry about all the hate you've been getting. But, I just wanted to let you know that I've always loved these tournaments and I hope things get better! Great job!
ReplyDeleteWhile it sucks that you'll be cancelling future tournaments, you are right, this kind of thing does come with popular events like this. But that doesn't mean that you should have to deal with being abused about these things.
ReplyDeleteI think you guys have definitely made the right decision :) I hope that everything goes okay with the rest of this tourney and that everyone feels better soon :)
Wow, I am so bummed about this. I love watching these things and voting. I get so many good recommendations from these. Actually, this is how I discovered Jeri Ready-Smith who is one of my favorites now. Ugh...I know how you feel though. I once wrote a negative article about a celeb and I was shocked at what some people said in comments. It was every four letter word you can think of along with attacks on my physical appearance, etc. It was so crazy and the article wasn't really that negative. My point, some people are assholes. I'm sorry a small group of people ruined it for everyone. *sad face*
ReplyDeleteSo sorry to hear about this! It's sad how only a small group of people can ruin everything for everyone- I sincerely love the Tourneys, they exposed me to new novels and the rest of the book community, and if it was not for last year's Crush Tourney, I would've never had read some of my favourite books! People should tried to have positive responses, even if they're mad about something, it sucks you've been caused all this pain.
ReplyDeleteSince this is going to be the last tourney (for now) I'm sure the rest is us will make sure to make it a successful Tourney and a wonderful sort of last tourney. For now, hopefully. You guys have done such a great job, putting in so much heart and work into it, I really hope you'll continue hosting Tourney's in the future!
Woah seriously, getting hate comments suck because you guys run the tourneys so well and I love them!
ReplyDeleteA pity such a decision was made but I understand that sometimes it might get out of control.
Nevertheless, great job with the past tourneys, continue to bombard us with other awesome posts please! x)
I'm so sorry to hear you guys have been so maliciously attacked! I know I'm not excited for all the guys in the top so far, but that doesn't stop me from rooting for the guys I love. Nor does it make me want to bash on those characters I can't stand. I just hope this tourney goes smoothly and every character gets a fair shot. Thanks so much for everything you guys do!
ReplyDeleteThis is so sad to hear, I don't understand why some people have to be negative over something that is supposed to be fun and lighthearted. x
ReplyDeleteI am so sorry to hear that this is happening to you guys. The tournament is a lot of fun and I always look forward to it. I completely understand why you would no longer want to host such an event if that is the thanks you are receiving.
ReplyDeleteIt's so sad that some people are making this harmless tourney a bigger issue than it should be. I so looove these tourneys your hosting. I discovered and loved A LOT of YA books because of the tournaments. We are all book lovers here and we should respect the author and their work and their well-loved characters(whom a LOT of fans love too); even Sebastian you know, I've been following c. clare's tumblr for a long time and there was a time where (if i'm not mistaken)that she answered a fan and said there's NOTHING WRONG for liking Sebastian. I, for one, have read the book and I know that he did despicable things but I still feel for the guy you know.Does that make me an anti-feminist or something. HELL NO. I'm a huge feminist myself but, we all have different feelings for a character, we perceive their individual stories differently, we are entitled to our own opinions and each of us should respect that.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow,I really THANK YOU guys for these tournaments. You guys really do great jobs. I do hope you continue these tourneys in the future! xoxo :D :D
omg. i'm so sorry you guys are getting burned. i personally love sebastian and although i didnt nominate him this tine (i was saving him for the villain tourney) i was happy to see him on the list. its really sad that you people who have been nothing but great with all these tourneys are being flamed.
ReplyDeletejust so its clear though, I LOVE JONATHAN/SEBASTIAN. and i think City of Lost Souls was amazingly written. i dont condone rape and its culture but there are just some characters that you feel attached to.i can relate to jonathan/sebastian not because he's evil but because of his complex personality. he's not a one dimensional character. he has other qualities that i think made him crush worthy to other girls.
and as Jeri (The Woman Upstairs) said, we Team Kilt shall provide you with positive energy. YOU GUYS ARE AMAZING. NO ONE CAN TAKE WHAT YOUR TOURNEYS ACCOMPLISHED AWAY FROM YOU! :)
*GIVES CHOCOLATES AND ICE CREAM* YOU ROCK.
OMG. i am one of those who actually love sebastian/jonathan and now i feel bad that you guys are being flamed because of him being included. although i didnt vote for him (i was saving him for the villains tourney), that didnt mean i didnt think of him as crush worthy. i totally understand the girls (and guys?) who nominated him. Yes, he is evil. but that is just one (huge) side of him. he isnt a one dimensional character. he has many aspects and other qualities that some of us can relate to.
ReplyDeletei am not condoning rape in any way. i think its evil. and sebastian is evil. but in my mind, Sebastian/ Jonathan isnt just that.
you ladies are amazing and these tourneys are fun. i hope you guys feel our love more than those hate. YOU ARE AMAZING AND NOTHING CAN TAKE THAT AWAY FROM YOU.
and as jeri (The Woman Upstairs) said, we Team Kilt will provide you with positive energy. hey, i wouldnt even be a member of Team kilt if it wasnt for your crush tourney the last time. so a huuuuge thank you for that.:)
<3
ReplyDeleteAww, I really look forward to these tournaments because they are so fun. I love how we get to meet people and what their opinions may be on the tournament and how they may just get me to change my mind about a certain character.
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry that this has happened, I hope that people realize what they are doing to others when comments like those go out. Hopefully this can come about with the Tournaments in the near future.
You know what? I am so sick of people attacking the Shadowhunters! If its not Cassie then its the fans, because we are so stupid for loving her books, now its the characters and blogs??? Seriously people get over yourselves. Why make unnecessary problems. The fact that they attacked you guys is absolutely disgusting. Screw freedom of speech, this is just hate speech. People voted for Sebastian because they have a crush on him, so what if he is evil, not like its his fault. And ITS JUST A BOOK!!!!!!!! Even though the characters are real to me, they actually aren't. I loved these tourneys so much and im so upset its over! But i understand why you are doing that, no one deserves hate mail
ReplyDeleteI know this has already been said in many previous comments but I just want to let you know that I really appreciated all the work and time you put into this blog! I am so sorry that you have been personally attacked because of the tourneys! Hopefully people will realise it has nothing to do with you who gets nominated. I think you have reacted responsibly and fairly. I love your blog and can't wait to see what ideas you come up with in the future!
ReplyDeleteI really loved the tourneys and I am sorry you guys are getting attacked all this drama. It is sad that people can be so negative and ruin such a fun event! You guys seriously rock for putting this one, and still putting on the YA Crush tourney even with all the flack. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, you guys do an awesome job. Don't let all the Debbie Downers get to you!!
ReplyDeleteWell, I honestly want to say that I support you guys for the sole fact that you created this tournament the first time around because you were passionate about something. I am truly sorry that this kind of thing happened to you guys, but I know that you guys are still amazing bloggers regardless of the tourneys. You guys are part of the reason my passion for YA books has grown so much, and regardless of what you do I want to thank you for making the internet an awesome place for those of us that read YA books and want someone to rant with about them.
ReplyDelete=)
I am simply repeating others sentiments, but I want you girls to know I support this fantastic blog. I discovered it about a year ago during your 1st Tourney & fell in love. I have discovered a wide range of books through & know it takes a ton of work. I will miss the Tourneys but understand. Hope it will return in the future. Thanks for all your hard work ladies. It does not go un-noticed or unappreciated!!!!
ReplyDeleteFirst off i like to so a HUGE THANK YOU for all the hard work you put into the tournaments, I have found soooooooooooo many AMAZING new books from them.
ReplyDeleteAnd while im sad to hear they will not be continuing understand your reasons and just scanning the comments i hope you feel all the love and support you have from many different readers around the world (Im in Australia) and know that you have brought many hours of joy with us waiting to see if i guy/girl won and many many more surfing all the books brought to our attention.
Hopefully one day people shall grow up and realize that yes we all love the characters and the world the live in it is not our world and we should treat people with respect. To personally attack a bloggers site for OTHER peoples opinions really is upsetting what ever happened to if you cant say something nice don't say anything at all. BIG HUGS ALL ROUND
*Sigh* I'm so sorry to hear about this. I really love your tournaments. When I saw that the Crush Tourney had started, I pretty much fangirled about it for a few hours and posted it all over the place. I really wish that there weren't so many haters out there. The tourney was just for fun. Why should there be so much hate? :(
ReplyDeleteIMHO, I think that Sebastian isn't all that bad. Aside from the whole he-is-a-villain and raping-his-own-sister thing, I think that he's quite the crush-worthy guy. (I really like his kinder and gentler moments)
So thank you so much for everything. You guys are awesome.
Lots of <3s for you for hosting such wonderful tournaments! :)
I'm really impressed by this post and the way you guys are handling this. It's a shame that people are attacking you and others for something you're not doing. And while I personally don't care for Sebastian, I totally respect and understand the choice you made NOT to take him off the list. I think it was the right one.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, while I'm sad to see the Tourneys go (even temporarily), I can understand why, and I hope that in the future people can stop with the attacking and we can all just discuss and enjoy books without it filling with drama.
I'm so sorry that this happened- it is absolutely awful that you had to go through it and I am really sorry to see the tournament closed for the year, but I think you've done the right thing. You shouldn't have to be subject to that.
ReplyDeletex.
Awww... The Crush Tournament is what first introduced me to the book blogging community. I'm sad to see it go, but you guys don't deserve that kind of treatment (and neither does the author who has nothing to do with how the tournament plays out), so I'm partially glad that this will be the last.
ReplyDeleteSome people really need to chill. The tournament isn't about who's the BEST character. It's just about who has the most fans.
To all haters out there - stop relating everything written on a book with real life. Sure, we love to think that the stories and characters we read about are real, but the thing is, these things didn't really happen in real life. And if did, well, what can you do? This is the world you live in, the people you live with.
ReplyDeleteFrom my understanding, YA Crush Tourney lets us vote for the characters we love. Some of you might hate bad characters because they do bad stuff, like lying, stealing, and killing but that doesn't mean The YA Sisterhood is promoting them because they allowed these characters to be in the tourney. Or that people who love these bad characters promote their actions. Likewise, some people hate good characters because they do good stuff that we most likely see everyday and are tired of seeing. But that doesn't mean they promote not doing good deeds, right?
My realization through all these words is that all you haters are pessimists. You only think about the bad traits of a character. A bad guy shows up in the tourney and you think The YA Sisterhood is promoting their actions. A good guy doesn't show up in the tourney and you think they are now trying to prevent other people to know their good traits.
Please, please, please realize that stories are made for your entertainment and not to offend you. If you are, then reading is probably not for you, as well as real life.
PS - If you have nothing good to say, then don't say anything. Attacking others is very different from debating, and once you found the line between those two things, you'll realize that things can be discussed rationally.
PPS - Don't say anything when you're emotionally-stressed as well. It makes you exaggerate a lot of stuff you won't normally say exaggeratedly. Trust me, I know.
I am really sorry to hear that this has happened. These tourneys are always great fun. I don't always agree with who is nominated, or even the winners, but this is purely entertainment. I can see why some people are very against some of the nominees, but they should be out there rallying against the person, and for another instead of attacking you guys who are doing nothing but abiding people's votes and creating something for us all to have fun with. I will miss the tourneys, but I completely understand why you have to discontinue them.
ReplyDeleteI'm really sorry, I'm sure all the drama is really too much when the tournaments are supposed to be for fun... But I want you to know that I LOVED every single one of them, that I (and a lot of us) appreciate the time you took to put this all together and that we truly love you, guys.
ReplyDeleteAll this hard work isn't easy and you doing it to share the love for books with us is amazing. So yeah, you all rock! :3
Forget about the haters, their single minded heads will grow up one day and realize that all the drama is useless. And that it hurts a lot of people.
From Switzerland I send you ALL my love and a million hugs :D
I´m sorry to hear this, I really liked the tourneys.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really a big fan of the crush tourney. Most people seem to just vote a character because of incentives from some authors and fans (some don't even know the character they're voting for) which kinda defeats the purpose of voting for *your* crush. But I have to admit that the tourney is quite fun and I honestly think that it's VERY IMMATURE and STUPID of those people who think you guys are promoting rape and such.
ReplyDeleteMaybe in nominations, aside from being able to vote for your crush you can also vote down a contestant?
I'm so glad that you've at least done this tourney :) I only stumbled across them during the Heroine one and it was fantastic. You ladies do a wonderful/amazing/super-fantastic-job networking all this a putting it together so I just wanted to say a massive thank you because its been such a source of enjoyment! I don't think many of us young'ins realize how hard it is to juggle family, work and blogging :)
ReplyDeleteThankyou for helping me to discover such an awesome network of bloggers
Geeeeez. While I am not surprised this kind of thing occurs, I am so sorry that you are experiencing it. It is the unfortunate fact that we will never be free of criticisms in some form and that some people will never mature and get their head out of their ass.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the fun and you ARE appreciated.
Hi, I was wondering if you were in need of any swag for your comps? I'm a YA author with a tonne of bookmarks that need rehoming and was wondering if you'd like some for giveaways? If so, please send me an address via facebook (Lily Crussell and I'll get some out to you x
ReplyDeleteWow. I totally understand where you gals are coming from. I am an artist and have felt the negativity of the public. Those that degrade and hate should not be allowed to make a comment. I like to see the good in everything, and try to uplift rather than put down. Thank you for putting up with people's rudeness and doing one more tournament. I am excited and have my fingers crossed for my favorite.
ReplyDeleteAnd to all the authors, keep up the incredible, inspirational work.
:( I'm sorry that you're receiving heat for this, it's really not fair. It's shame that this has to stop but I completely understand why you're doing it.
ReplyDeleteI also want to say that I'm very impressed with how you're handling this. If it had been me, there probably would've, unfortunately, been a lot of crying and yelling.
Anyway, I, and nearly every other person that has posted, am there for you if you want to talk or rant or whatever :) I hope what has happened doesn't bring you down because what you've accomplished with this is absolutely amazing and has changed a lot of peoples lives. I know quite a few of my friends that have been brought over to the reading side because of this event.
I hope nothing like this ever happens to you or anyone else again! *hugs*
YOU GUYS ROCK! YOU already know I love you girls! I'm so sorry people feel the need to be hateful and rude that they felt the need to attack you and Cassie. Don't let people like that get to you guys. THEY ARE NOT WORTH It. Bullies never are! This isn't real life, it's a fun tournament made up of fictional characters. What you guys have done for it is amazing. THANK YOU for all the hard work you have put into this.
ReplyDeleteIt made me really sad to read this. While on one hand, I'm glad girls feel passionate about not supporting rape culture, I am so upset and disheartened that this somehow got directed at you. As you said in your post, you aren't responsible for how people vote and I applaud your choice not to censor voting. John Stuart Mill gave one of the best reasons against censorship which was if you allow people to speak freely, even when they are "wrong", it forces people to reexamine their own belief in what it is they find wrong about it, thus strengthening their own beliefs. Allowing Sebastian to stay on the list and bringing this all up in the first place, I hope will make many people rethink rape culture and whether it really is acceptable to label someone like that as a "crush"
ReplyDeleteI am so so so sorry that you had to be subjected to unnecessary hate. I love books so much and it is so easy to get drawn into the worlds of these characters, but ultimately, sometimes you have to get a grip, and your feelings towards a fictional character are never an excuse to treat REAL people badly.
Best of luck with everything!
xx
Shiva
Wow...I didn't realize people reacted so harshly towards you all, and towards Cassandra Clare over these events! That's crazy, and I think that some people need to realize that these events are for FUN...they are not meant to stir up issues, or to bring up the whole definition of a hero or heroine (which if we're going to go all literal basically just means the main male or female character in a book, also called the protagonist...just saying, they don't even really have to be heroic :P just putting that out there)...and they are definitely not meant to give people a reason to attack others.
ReplyDeleteI'm so sorry that some people can't see the fun in these events, and that they choose to be so negative about it all. Personally, I love these Tourneys, and I love reading everyone's posts about their advocates. Although, I'll admit, I've never been a fan of some of the comments. I did notice that some basically just attack the character (and sometimes even the advocate) that they don't want to win, which made me a little sad, but I do think that most people see the fun in it all. Thank you for all your hard work on these events ladies, and I'm sorry that not everyone is appreciative of all the work that you put into these events. I hope that in the future if you do choose to hold another Tourney such as this one, that everyone will come into it with a positive attitude and leave their negativity out of it.
Also, I have to say that I fully support your decision to leave the ballots as is, and to let the voters decide on the crushes. Just because some people don't approve of Sebastian doesn't mean that they have a right to attack you, especially since you didn't put him on the ballot. The voters did, and as I mentioned, I think it's great that you stood up for the voters...some governments should take your advice on that one. ;) haha As far as Sebastian goes. I can't honestly say I've ever been a fan of him myself, but I know he actually does have a lot of fans. They're all over tumblr, and I've seen plenty of Sebastian fan-art on Deviant-art as well. He's a dark character, and I know I've rooted for the underdog before, so I can understand why people are interested in him. They're hoping that he'll change and that underneath his nasty exterior, there's something good inside. I don't think anyone intends to condone his behaviour, nor to they mean to advocate any of his wrongdoings. They just think there's more to him, and that he isn't as bad as he seems. I think it's great that you let them vote for him, even if not everyone agreed with him being on there. Thanks for allowing us all the chance to exercise our freedom of speech, and I'm sorry that because of that you were attacked by others.
Thanks again, and I hope that the rest of this Tourney isn't as discouraging for you.
Ambur :)
Wow! That's horrible! I'm sorry to hear that! I can't believe people can be so crude and nasty. That's just so unbelievable! I especially couldn't believe that people were writing hate mail to Cassandra Clare.
ReplyDeleteSo sorry for you guys!! It's awful that people can react that way, hopefully things will get better for you, good luck and kisses.. you have made and awesome job with your blog, it is amazing!!!
ReplyDelete
